How Hermès colors work

Hermès has created hundreds of leather colours over the years. Some are permanent classics. Others appear for one season and then disappear. Each colour has a French name and an internal code, and the same name can look different on Togo, Epsom, Swift or crocodile. That is why collectors always describe a Hermès Birkin by both colour and leather.

Classic Hermès Birkin colors

These Birkin colors come back again and again, and they hold their value well:

• Noir: black, the most requested Hermès colour of all.
• Gold: a warm caramel tan, often paired with white stitching.
• Etoupe: a grey-taupe that works with almost everything.
• Gris Etain: a cool pewter grey.
• Craie: a soft chalk white.

Neutrals vs brights: which Birkin colours hold value?

Neutral Birkin Hermès colors such as Noir, Gold, Etoupe and Craie are the easiest to wear and to resell. Bright colours can sell for a premium when they are rare, but demand moves with fashion. Two-tone special orders sit in their own group. A neutral outside with a bright verso lining gives you both.
