Hermès Special Order FAQ

Answers about HSS bags, authenticity, condition and ordering.

What does HSS mean on a Hermès bag?

HSS stands for Horseshoe Stamp. Hermès adds a small horseshoe symbol next to the date and craftsman stamp on bags made to a client’s special order, which is how a special order piece is identified.

How is a special order different from a regular Birkin or Kelly?

A special order is built to a custom specification. The client chooses combinations Hermès does not produce in its regular collections, such as a two-tone exterior, a contrasting interior, contrast stitching and a chosen hardware finish.

Can I order an HSS bag directly from Hermès?

Special orders are offered at Hermès’ discretion to established boutique clients, and production can take many months. Buying a finished HSS bag lets you own a rare combination without the wait.

Are the bags new or pre-owned?

Each listing shows its condition. Most pieces are new and unworn, often with protective plastic still on the hardware. Pre-owned bags are clearly labeled in their titles and descriptions.

What comes with each bag?

Accompaniments are listed on every product page. They typically include the Hermès box, dust bag, and for the Kelly the lock, keys, clochette and shoulder strap.

How do I request a bag?

Open any bag and click Request This Special Order. You will be taken to the listing to check availability and complete your purchase securely.
